Since the beginning of time, humans have struggled for and against their own mortality. There has been a universal drive to leave one’s mark. This has evolved from the graffiti of early cave drawings into high-resolution graphics and virtual realties of ones and zeros.
Prior to the camera, our knowledge of the moment was left to the interpretation of the hands of artists. Joseph Nicephore said of Photography that “it is a Universal Language, a language written with light.” For me, Photography provides a platform for that narrative to unfold. It is a harmonic and intuitive dialogue based upon visual nuance and reference.
Bresson spoke of photography and its’ ability to “achieve eternity” by capturing the moment. Photography has changed the world forever and the photographic image has become part of the fabric of our society. Ironically, in Man’s attempt to mechanize and reproduce reality, we now take the photographic image for granted. Irreverently even shortening its name (photo, pic, snap, etc). What was once considered mysterious and magical to be overlooked or disregarded as commonplace.
These photographs attempt to capture the essence of life’s subtleties. They explore an intimacy of unspoken moments. These are moments of truth and moments of myth – the essence of something larger yet less tangible. These moments have been stolen from reality and truly have been frozen in time. They are recordings of traditions, foundations, contradictions, and evolutions- Evolutions of thought, of theory and technique.
